Pesi Shroff – A Racing Legend Reimagined

Pesi Shroff was born in Mumbai in 1965 and is widely regarded as one of India’s most iconic figures in horse racing.

Licensed by the Royal Western India Turf Club at the tender age 16, he launched a riding career that would span decades and earn him legendary status throughout India.

In a sport that is mostly about losing, Shroff’s strike rate of over 1,750 wins from 5,600 mounts went some way to holding defeat at bay.

>He won more than 100 Classic races – the highest ranked races in the sport, and 29 Derbies in total – eight of which were in front of the Mumbai home crowd at Mahalaxmi Racecourse. He remains the only jockey to have achieved this unique feat.

>Renowned for his analytical mind and rock‑steady temperament, he showcased his talent against the best of not only what India had to offer, but the world.

>If you know anything about horse racing, British and Irish greats such as Lester Piggott, Mick Kinane, and Walter Swinburn came to India and were left trailing in Shroff’s wake. He beat all three in consecutive Derby wins from 1989 to 1991 and he rode for top-class owners in the sport such as Vijay Mallya, M.A.M. Ramaswamy, Deepak Khaitan, and Khushroo Dhunjibhoy—earning widespread trust and acclaim.

There are many top-class jockeys who have failed to translate their outrageous ability in the saddle to training horses but in 2004, Shroff transitioned seamlessly to become a trainer, forgoing the usual apprenticeship due to his proven expertise.

He was an instant success and shattered new ground in this role—becoming the first Indian to win over 1,000 races both as jockey and trainer, achieving his 1,000th training win with Khartoum in 2018.

His landmark Derby triumph as a trainer came in 2010 with Jacqueline, who captured four Classic races in a single season—an unprecedented feat.

>Today, Pesi Shroff continues to dominate, earning multiple training championships and upholding a legacy defined by precision, poise, and passion and to have him on the training roster for Kingsmoor is a true blessing.
