Red Bishop edged out Prokofiev in a thrilling tussle to win the Group Three Y. Shanker Rao Memorial Deccan Colts Championship Stakes in Hyderabad.
Trained by legendary former jockey and champion trainer Pesi Shroff, and ridden with aplomb by Trevor Patel, Red Bishop was only Kingsmoor’s second runner in India and became our first winner on the subcontinent.
At the end of the mile contest there was just a short head between Red Bishop and Patel and Prokofiev and Anthony Raj, with over five lengths back to Knights Regent. the race was run in 1 minute 38.90 seconds.
“He broke evenly and got tucked in near the back of the pack,” James O’Donnell, Kingsmoor racing manager said.
“We saw his strength and tenacity as he pulled to the outside and that turn of foot and speed as he came to the front head-to-head with Prokofiev and just managed to pi him on the post.”
O’Donnell confirmed that Red Bishop came out of the race in good order, and is looking forward to the next opportunities.
“Red Bishop came out of the race really well. He ate up all of his feed and is on the horse box on his way to Pune,” he said.
“The overall speed of the race is only about half a second off the track record, so overall it was an awesome result for everybody.
“We have a couple of options. There is obviously the Pune Derby coming up and the Hyderabad Derby.
“We’ll wait to hear what Pesi Shroff tells us and we look forward to making a plan and look forward to seeing him on the track in the coming weeks.”
