“Tough little fellow” Red Bishop readies for Mysore

Fresh from his humdinger in Hyderabad, Red Bishop will head to the Mysore Derby on October 26.

Red Bishop was just denied by Mountain Jewel in a thrilling showdown in the Group 1 Deccan Derby in Hyderabad two weeks ago and legendary trainer Pesi Shroff reports his charge has come out of the race bouncing.

Red Bishop, who is part owned by Kingsmoor World, has run eight times in total for two wins and three placed finishes and will prepare for his ninth race in Bangalore.

“Red Bishop has travelled from Hyderabad, where we went down second in the Derby, to Bangalore,” Shroff told Kingsmoor.com.

“He has travelled well. He was a bit tired for a few days but has freshened up now. He is scheduled to run in the Mysore Derby on the Sunday the 26th.

“Hopefully, weather permitting, I will be giving him a bit of work in Bangalore and then he will travel on to Mysore.

“All is well. The horse seems to be fresh and it quite happy. He is a tough little fellow.”

Red Bishop showed conclusively in the City Of Pearls that he belonged in Group 1 company and was happy at the distance of a mile and a quarter.

Red Bishop, ridden by Trevor Patel, was locked in an epic struggle to the line with Mountain Jewel and Anthony Raj only to be edged out at the post.

Such was the superiority of the two horses that they pulled a full seven lengths clear of Northern Waves, a dual winner, who was third under Mukesh Kumar.

Red Bishop hit a top speed of 39.33 mph during the race –  0.04 mph slower than Mountain Jewel.

He was out in front early, but showed a willing attitude and did not fade on his step up in distance – his final furlong time of 12.97s was faster than his rival, to whom he was conceding 1.5kgs due to the sex allowance.
